Character Sheet Templates

Character Sheet for Dungeons & Dragons 5e

Character Sheet for Dungeons & Dragons 5e

Hello Questers!

A huge sigh of relief resounds across the office as Character Sheet Templates are released before we take a well-deserved break.

Character Sheet Templates.

Gummi posted an awesome YouTube announcement and blog post about our new Character Sheet Templates. We can now share our beautiful character sheets with other GMs, our players and the community, as well as setting a campaign to a particular template, ensuring everyone can enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Feel free to head over to our Discord if you have a template to share or to request one for your favorite TTRPG.

Phew. Now that we have Templates, many of us here at the office are taking a well-deserved summer vacation. That means we might be quiet on the update and presence on the Discord front, but general support should be unaffected. We'll always have some devs and support on duty throught the summer so play away and have fun! 🫡

What shall we be doing on this vacat…. HEY LOOK LIBRARY! We added a couple more SRDs into the Library this week too!

  • 2d20 SRD added to the Library
  • Pathfinder 1e added to the Library
  • Year Zero Engine added to the Library
  • Mobile - Fixed an issue where you had to click once to close the keyboard and again to pick a system in the new system selector.

Happy Gaming!

PS. We also made an awesome website for our Character Sheets!

Feedback and News

Feedback & News

Feedback & News

Hello Questers!

Our Playtest of Templates on Discord was fantastic and we’re so close to launching.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our Playtest for Character Sheet Templates. There was some stellar feedback that we implemented where we could. Our starter templates are going to be so much better thanks to their input. Delta Green, RuneQuest, D&D 5e… to name but a few!

Behind the scenes, the devs and designers have been hard at working getting everything ship shape for the Templates launch. So much so, that Soon(™) should be known as is THIS WEEK!!! Keep an eye out on Discord for announcement of the soft launch!

We also got a chance to squash a bug or two: notably Session Stories were not generating for some folks. That’s now fixed and highlights of your games should generate as usual.

Today also marks the beginning of our monthly newsletter. We aim to cover the past month’s changelogs, helpful hints for getting the most out of Quest Portal and shed a light on our community members.

  • Mobile: Fixed issue where notes were not restored properly from trash.
  • Session Stories fixed.
  • Monthly Newsletter started.

Pro Hint: If you need to undo something you can either Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z on the web or shake your phone.

Happy Gaming!

Playtesters Testing

Hello Questers!

Discord gets a glow up as amazing playtesters improve our Alpha Phase testing of Character Templates.

After a little reorganization of Discord, which included bringing on two awesome Moderators, we could finally bring forth something we have been waiting to do for a long time. Playtesters!

The first round of playtesting our Character Templates has been going extremely well, and great progress is being made thanks to their feedback. This includes a Delta Green template and a D&D 5e template.

There’s still time to join in on the playtesting phase of Templates by messaging Hem/Volly on Discord or by emailing us that you’re interested.

On the platform, we have been hard at work squashing bugs and getting ready for Templates Phase 2! Stayed tuned.

  • GM rolls don’t default to the first character in the NPC character sheet.
  • Claimable Scenarios image updated to include the adventure Mirehaven’s Curse.
  • Quest Portal Library includes more FAQ answers

Developers At Work

Developers at Work

Hello Questers!

Hush descends across the office, and only the sound of tapping keyboards, clicking of the mouse buttons and the mutterings of “nearly there” serve to indicate the progress of a new feature being created.

It’s a quiet one this week. A couple of small bug fixes here and there, but mostly, we’ve been hard at work on our new feature, which we should be able to share over the next couple of weeks.

Instead of letting the changelog go without something cool to learn about Quest Portal, did you know that we have an entry on the Quest Portal Library all about Notes and a section all about Formatting Shortcuts. Between these two, you can make useful notes and beautiful character sheets! And Gummi just put together a new blog on using the AI Notes feature and connecting notes within a campaign.

Also, hot news straight out of Mobile Dev: the bug plaguing us Android users over the weekend got fixed! Huzzah!

Mobile Improvements:

  • Android users can now access their notes.

Quest Portal Library Entry

Quest Portal Library Entry

Quest Portal manual added to The Library

If the answer is to check the manual - then we got you!

This week we spent a lot of time pulling together all the documentation (and features lists) into a Library for Quest Portal … IN Quest Portal. That’s right, we added the Quest Portal to the Library.

In our effort to be more helpful, we wanted to add the manual to the library to give you even more ways of finding help when it comes to Quest Portal - in addition to you being able to reach out to us on Discord, clicking the Chat with Us button in the app, emailing us ( or by checking the Web and Youtube. And for Pro users, you can even ask your assistant about Quest Portal when its not in session!

Talking about being helpful, here’s two helpful tips:

Did you know that you can add Slots, Roll Buttons and Points in a table by using the "/" shortcut?

Pro User AI Tip

If you ask The Assistant to help generate character stats, you can also ask it to create rollable buttons for you too! Try: “Create stats for a D&D 5e characters, anything rollable should include a roll button in the format [[skill roll formula]]”

  • Quest Portal added to the Library
  • Fate added to the Library
  • Old School Essentials added to the Library
  • Sheet Drawer Width is now responsive

Mobile Notes

Mobile devices showcasing Quest Portal's Notes

Notes on Mobile

Access all the Notes we need on the go? Slots for homebrew Universal Character Sheets? Yes and yes, because you deserve it.

We are very pleased to announce that Notes have come to Mobile Devices - including all the Notes features available on the web app. This includes the new Points and Slots widgets, the cross linking of @ mentions and the AI Notes Assistant to create locations, secrets and items on the fly!

SLOTS! Yes that’s right, the slots widget is here. In your Notes and on your Character Sheets, you can now add slots to track all sorts of things, from spell slots to equipped items to prepared items… the possibilities are all at your fingertips with the ability to mark half and full slots.

The Library also continues to grow as we add the Paragon SRD and the Cypher SRD into our system.

iOS and Android Improvements

  • Notes now available on mobile apps
  • Fix: Android keyboard now collapses when the Notes drawer closes.

New Library Books

Pale grey New Library Books on a dark background with a purple ray of light, and a set of polyhedral dice.

New Library Books

We do enjoy a good chat, don’t you? A lot of good improvements and fixes were made to the chat with regards roll announcements last week - from misaligned portraits to incorrect yelling of FAILED, we can now yell EXTREME SUCCESS (on a single line now).

Hopefully you also enjoy a good read - because Black Flag roleplaying, D&D 3.5 SRD and Sly Flourish’s The Lazy DM’s books are in the library!

iOS and Android Improvements

  • When downloading an image from a note, the keyboard no longer opens nor jumps to a random line.
  • Endless scrolling, components out of view… Editing character sheets on the mobile is now a lot smoother.
  • Sidebar icons and text enlarged with extra space to accommodate touch targets and readability.

Like anyone who loves a good ttrpg system to peruse through (even if we rarely get a chance to play) we always want more. Are there any great systems with SRDs out there that you would love to see in our library?

If so, let us know! Head on over to the Discord and tell us in the Suggestions channel, or drop us an email.

Bugs and Maintenance

Light grey Bugs and Maintenance on a dark background with a purple light ray

Bugs and Maintenance

Ewww - unwanted bugs! Last week saw a big purge of bugs, regular maintenance and various fixes across Quest Portal, from mobile to the web platform to even our office! Many changes and updates are still in the works, so keep an eye out for those.

  • Scene and roll announcements are no longer truncated.
  • Notes Folders had a few updates. A folder where a 2nd level folder had been deleted, can now be placed in other folders. Also, clicking the 3 dot menu button doesn’t also open and close the folder.
  • Campaign header images on Campaign Invites can now handle portrait and landscape images.
  • Long names no longer misalign timestamps in notifications, and also are no longer centered in the more users menu in Session top bar.

iOS and Android Improvements

  • Fixed issue where global and campaign assistants interact.
  • Added the write DELETE to confirm character delete.
  • Made campaign fallback color consistent across the app.
  • Fixed lag in campaign header scroll

If you find any bugs that we missed during our virtual fumigation, then let us know! We have a couple of different methods:

On the web, click your profile icon and then “Report a bug” in the Quest Portal web app. The system will automatically capture a short screen recording and upload error logs to our servers that really help us squash the bug.

If you’re on a mobile, then feel free to email us, or use the Bug-Reports channel on the Discord! (The iOS and Android app bug report feature is on the way though!)

Select Your TTRPG Game System

A dropdown menu listing Tabletop roleplaying games.

Selecting the TTRPG Game System you are playing will help us prioritize support.

In campaign settings, you can now set your campaign to a specific TTRPG game system. We offer official support for a few TTRPGs, (check out our Library) and plan to add support for even more in future updates.

To help us get the games you're playing prioritised for future support, we would love if you would let us know what you're playing! If your game is not listed in the Game System selection, let us know on Discord or over email and we'll make sure to add them.

Multiplayer cursors and the title Fixes.

New TTRPG Game Systems in our Library

Three new SRD's in our Library.

Image showing three Roleplaying Systems, Fate Core, Mark of the Odd and Forged in the Dark

Hey all!
We are back after some relaxing vacation time, and all of us are getting really excited for the coming months. 🥳

Awesome SRD's added to our library

The highlight of this week is that we have added two new SRD’s to the library! These are two awesome roleplaying games that I am sure you will love and that some of you have been waiting for.

🔵 Fate Core SRD

A roleplaying game about ordinary people who live pretty dramatic lives. The System is perfect for people who want to play out a blockbuster movie or in a world where something is just a little bit off. You could get inspired by watching The Unsleeping City by Dimension 20, where Brennan shows his love of New York City or check out Lockwood and Co, a paranormal post-apocalyptic world. Super sweet system to write your own stories!

Fate uses the Fudge dice roll system so of course, we needed to add some dice to Quest Portal! You can now roll dice that shows blank, minus, and plus by writing /roll 1df in the chat. You can also create dice rolls by using brackets. For example [[1df]] to roll one Fate dice.

🥳 Evil Hat and Randy Oest

Evil Hat is an awesome company that you should go check out if you haven't. They publish Fate and many more Game Systems.

Randy Oest has done some awesome work making Table Top Roleplaying games accessible, check out their project at; you will not be disappointed.

🍄 Into the Odd SRD added to the library.

An awesome theatre of the mind-system created by Chris McDowall. You might recognize the name Electric Bastionaland, which expands on the Into the Odd system. You should check him Chris's work at

Into the Odd has also been used as an inspiration for many games, such as Mausritter! 🐭

💎 Improvement to Blades in the Dark SRD

We added Blades in the Dark a couple of weeks back and now we have improved the library linking for the Assistant, it should be more accurate and give you better information.

✨All of the SRD’s have a dedicated Assistant

If you have Quest Portal Pro, then you can use The Assistant for all of these systems. They can brainstorm with you ideas about your homebrew world and link you to the rules and resources.

🤷‍♀️ What about the tech stuff?

We have been working on improving the mobile experience behind the scenes, making things work smoother and eventually look better for the next release, the fancy 2.0.0!

Let us know if you decide to run Fate Core, Into the Odd or Blades in the Dark and tell us what type of shenanigans you got into! And happy world-creating from all of us here at Quest Portal 🧙

The Lightless Beacon - A scenario just for you!

The digital cover of The Lightless Beacon from Quest Portal.

Claim a free scenario & start playing your heart out.

We have a gift for you! Free adventure packed with scenes and atmosphere. The Lightless Beacon is an awesome Call of Cthulhu scenario that is perfect for new and experienced keepers to run. Take your investigators on a ride! You can copy the scenario from the Home screen slideshow.

Welcome to The Lightless Beacon, this year’s Call of Cthulhu scenario for the first Greg Stafford Day—a day to celebrate the life and works of Greg and The Chaosium he founded way back in 1975. We hope you’ll be able to gather some friends and enjoy this scenario together.

The Lightless Beacon is set on Beacon Island, near Rockport, Massachusetts, on April 12th, 1926. It is intended as a short introductory scenario for novice Keepers, new players, or both! Experienced players and Keepers should also find something to enjoy here, too. Designed to be run in as little as one hour, this game is ideal for those who don’t have the time for a longer game session, or are just building up their confidence with the Call of Cthulhu RPG.

While The Lightless Beacon is presented as a standalone adventure and comes with four pre-generated investigators (enabling you to dive right in), it could also form the start of a new campaign, as it throws together complete strangers and plunges them into the world of the Cthulhu Mythos before they have a chance to catch their breath. There’s a mystery to solve, a threat to overcome, and a glimpse at the true horrors lurking in the darkness: all key themes of a good Call of Cthulhu adventure!

  • Onboarding. We added a notification for people using browsers other than Chrome, letting them know that we are better tested on Chrome. We are, however, fixing a bunch of Safari and Firefox issues now.
  • Accounts. We added the ability to delete your account. We hope that it will be our least used feature.
  • Performance. We added methods to reduce the size of images based on your screen size so it will not affect the visual quality of images.
  • Dice. Lots of small improvements with our dice menu and cards; we sum up the rolls, show individual rolls if you are rolling more than one die, show the results from highest to lowest (like the menu), and now the dice fade out nicely.

  • Avatars. We added notification prompts around missing permissions or missing cameras.
  • Campaigns. We fixed an issue where if you deleted the name of a campaign, you couldn’t add a new name.
  • Scenes. We fixed some issues in the full-screen mode that didn’t allow you to enable/disable avatar tracking.
  • Dice. We fixed an issue with the dice menu on Safari.
  • Character Sheets. We fixed an issue where updates from a Game Master didn’t update the character sheet for players in real time. We’re all about real-time!
  • Notes. Fixed some issues around dragging notes into favourites.

Do you have a favourite campaign? You can now reorder your campaigns any way you want. Just drag 'n drop them in place on the left-side navigation bar.

💎 Improvements

  • Performance. Last week was all about performance improvements. Speed is a feature that is often overlooked. Please let us know if you find something slow, and we'll tackle it immediately!
  • Scenes: We've implemented Pan and Zoom on scenes during sessions. Possibly a hint for a bigger upcoming feature ;)
  • Scenes. Music used to be required when adding new scenes. Now, it's more of a friendly recommendation.

🐞 Fixes

  • Character Sheets. We fixed a crash that happened when creating a new Character immediately after joining as a new user.
  • Sessions. We squashed a bug that caused the app to go bonkers when you added a new character in the middle of a session.
  • Chat. We fixed an issue where we would show you a spinner, not the chat.
  • Scenes. Fixed some nasty little resizing bugs.

Display thy name!

A big room with a fireplace, table, and a few chairs. Light is shinging through a window and hitting a table.

The room feels stuffy, but a light is shining in from the window...

Happy Monday, everyone.

We’ve been hard at work squashing bugs and enhancing the experience of Quest Portal. We’ve got some exciting new features in the works, but until we can release them, we have some improvements and fixes for you:

💎 Improvements

  • We switched all players to using Display Names instead of Usernames within the app. More expressive and fun! Change your Display Name in Account Settings.
  • Players can now easily go back to their campaigns after creating characters. A big purple button does the trick.
  • Players can hover over the character avatar on their character sheets to get the option to edit the character info and visuals in the Character Creator.
  • We improved the way the top bar scales and cleaned it up a bit.
  • We made a bunch of usability improvements to the Notes feature. Most notably: Players now get a warning when moving notes between private and campaign. Same when deleting a note. Players can now open a parent note without selecting it.
  • Players can now right-click some buttons and links to open them in new tabs. Try it with campaigns in the Navigation bar.
  • We added campaign thumbnails to the character cards in the character overview.
  • We improved loading states and removed loading flashes that could appear between views.

🐞 Fixes

  • We fixed a lot of bugs in Notes. It’s much better now!
  • Fixed an issue where a campaign sometimes disappeared from the navigation bar if a character was removed.
  • We fixed an issue where some players were sometimes unable to delete characters.
  • Fixed some visual bugs on Safari.
  • Fixed an issue where some Keeper cards got duplicated in Campaign Lobby.
  • We fixed some typos. Those are important too.
  • A number of smaller fixes should make your experience better.

Invites and Email Signup

A screenshot of the signup page in Quest Portal.

The Quest Portal signup screen now includes email.

This week brings a bunch of improvements to our signup and onboarding flows. Inviting new users has been shipped to a subset of people. Let us know if you would like to add more people to your campaign, and we will turn this on for you.

Now people can join with emails and all the bells and whistles that go along with that, such as email verification and confirmations.

Take some Notes!

The notes tool in Quest Portal is open at a note about Locations in the Highlands.

The notes tool in action.

Want to take some notes during a session but don't want to lose your immersion? Now you can write and read your notes in the Notes tool. What's even better, you can share those notes with the group by creating group/campaign notes that are shared.

Notes are a handy block-style editor, similar to Notion, that allows you to create and rearrange blocks as you see fit.

The notes tool is available to game masters and players. Don't forget to have your favourite notes handy by favouriting them!

Notes are a central feature in Quest Portal that will get a lot of love in the coming months.

Set the Scene

The scenes drawer in Quest Portal. The Game Master is ordering scenes by dragging them.

Viewing and organizing scenes in a session.

We're super excited to announce our Scenes feature. Role-playing is about collaborative storytelling, and setting the scene where those stories unfold is important. We've created Scenes to feel like a slideshow. The game master can easily navigate between the different scenes with the visuals and the atmosphere already attached and autoplay.

Scenes are a game master tool and won't be available for players to see.

What is a scene?

A scene is a narrative beat in your story, a backdrop to a collection of actions, a battlemap, or generic background. It's whatever visual the game master wants to show the players while the story is being told. Each scene comprises a visual and, optionally a soundscape/music. This way, when you change scenes, the atmosphere changes as well. As we build out Scenes, this feature will start to include more visuals you can show your players.

You can create your scene by uploading a visual and attaching your music. Or, you can use the hundreds of pre-made scenes in the Scenes tool.

We've partnered with many creators in the TTRPG space to provide us with background art, battlemaps, music and soundscapes.
