Quest Portal MCP server

Connect your AI agent to Quest Portal

Use Claude, ChatGPT, or another AI agent to prepare and run your tabletop games. Your agent can read session recaps, update character sheets, write notes, build scenes, and search your campaign library, using only your Quest Portal account.

Server URL

https://mcp.questportal.com/mcp
  • Requires Quest Portal Pro
  • Sign in with OAuth
  • Streamable HTTP

Set up

You need a Quest Portal Pro subscription. See plans to start one. When you connect, Quest Portal asks you to sign in and approve access for your agent.

Claude

On Pro and Max plans:

  1. In Claude on the web or Claude Desktop, open Customize → Connectors, then select Add → Add custom connector.
  2. Name it Quest Portal, enter the server URL https://mcp.questportal.com/mcp, and select Add.
  3. Select Connect, sign in to Quest Portal, and approve access.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner or Primary Owner must add the connector for the organization first: open Organization settings → Connectors, select Add → Custom → Web, name it Quest Portal, enter the server URL, and select Add. On Enterprise, a custom role with access to manage connectors can also do this. Members then open Customize → Connectors, find Quest Portal, and select Connect.

To use it in a chat, select + → Connectorsand turn on Quest Portal. Once connected, it's also available in the Claude mobile apps.

Claude Code plugin

The plugin adds the connector and a skill that helps Claude use Quest Portal well. Add the marketplace with its full URL, then install the plugin:

/plugin marketplace add https://github.com/QuestPortal/plugins
/plugin install questportal-plugin@questportal-plugins

Run /mcp, choose Quest Portal, and sign in to authenticate.

ChatGPT

Custom connector: turn on Developer Mode in ChatGPT on the web, create a connector with the server URL, and choose OAuth authentication. Then sign in to Quest Portal and approve access.

Workspace plugin:a ChatGPT workspace admin can import the Quest Portal marketplace from the workspace's admin settings under Plugins → Add → Import marketplace with https://github.com/QuestPortal/plugins. Members can then install Quest Portal from Plugins and sign in. See OpenAI's marketplace import guide.

Whether you can add custom connectors, and whether they can make changes as well as read, depends on your ChatGPT plan and workspace settings. Your workspace admin may need to allow it. See OpenAI's developer mode guide for current requirements.

Codex

Add the server from the Codex CLI:

codex mcp add questportal --url https://mcp.questportal.com/mcp

Sign in to Quest Portal and approve access when Codex asks. To install the plugin instead, add the marketplace, then install Quest Portal from the Plugins directory in the desktop app:

codex plugin marketplace add QuestPortal/plugins

Other MCP clients

Any client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth can connect. Use the server URL above with the Streamable HTTP transport. The client registers itself and signs you in through auth.questportal.com using OAuth 2.0 with PKCE. Never paste a password or token into a chat.

Developers can find OAuth metadata and the server card on the developer resources page.

What your agent can do

Your agent works with the campaigns you own or play in, within the permissions you approve.

  • Campaigns

List your campaigns, read campaign details, create campaigns, and update an owned campaign's name, description, profile image, and cover.

  • Sessions and recaps

Find recent sessions, read recaps and attendance, and review session activity such as scenes and dice rolls.

  • Characters and sheets

Create characters, update their details and portraits, and read or edit character sheets, including Call of Cthulhu 7th edition sheets.

  • Notes

Read, search, create, and update notes, organize them into folders, and add images.

  • Campaign library

Search the books and PDFs in a campaign library and answer with links to the exact source pages.

  • Scenes and music

In campaigns you own, create and edit scenes, organize the scene bar, add gallery scenes, and find, attach, or upload music for a scene's soundtrack.

  • Scheduling

Read and save a campaign's session schedule, view who is attending, and set your own response.

  • Quest Portal help

Search and read Quest Portal's help documentation to answer product questions.

What it can't do

Some actions stay in Quest Portal. Your agent can't:

  • Delete campaigns, characters, notes, scenes, or folders.
  • Invite, remove, or change campaign members, or reveal invite links.
  • Make payments, change your subscription, or read billing details.
  • Change your account, password, or sign-in settings.
  • See anything your Quest Portal account can't already see.

Permissions and access

When you connect, Quest Portal shows which agent is asking and the permissions it requests. Only approve agents you recognize.

Characters
Read character templates, characters, and sheets; create characters and update their details, portraits, and sheets.
Campaigns
Read campaigns, sessions, schedules, and campaign library content; create and update campaigns and schedules.
Notes
Read and search notes; create and update notes, folders, and note images.
Scenes
Search the music catalog. In campaigns you own, read and update scenes, the scene bar, and soundtracks.

Who can do what

  • Your agent has the same access as you. Campaign owners can change campaign details and schedules, and only owners can read or change a campaign's scenes and soundtracks. Players can read the campaign and work with their own characters.
  • Campaign notes are shared: any campaign member, including a player, can read and edit them. Private notes stay visible and editable only by their owner.
  • The MCP server requires a Quest Portal Pro subscription. Some accounts without Pro are getting campaign access during a gradual rollout: when another member of a campaign has Pro, they can use supported tools in that campaign only.
  • Scheduling needs preview access, and note-content search has extra eligibility requirements.

Revoke access

To stop an agent using your account, disconnect or remove Quest Portal in that client's connector or plugin settings. Each approval lasts up to 30 days unless the client renews it, and access stops when it expires. If you no longer trust a client or think someone else connected one, email hi@questportal.com and we'll help you remove its access.

Example prompts

  • Summarize what happened in the last session of my Masks of Nyarlathotep campaign.
  • Create a note called “Arkham NPCs” in my campaign with a short entry for each NPC we met last session.
  • Search my campaign library for the rules on sanity loss and link me to the pages.
  • Make a new scene for the Miskatonic University library and add some tense ambient music to it.
  • Update my investigator's backstory on their character sheet with what happened in Boston.
  • When is our next session, and who has said they can make it?
  • How do I share a handout with only one player in Quest Portal?

Troubleshooting

Sign-in fails or the approval page shows an error

Sign in to the Quest Portal account you want to connect at app.questportal.com, then disconnect and reconnect Quest Portal in your AI client and approve access again. Allow pop-ups for your AI client. Approval lasts up to 30 days, so reconnect if it has expired.

The agent says Quest Portal Pro is required

The MCP server needs a Quest Portal Pro subscription. Some accounts without Pro are getting campaign access during a gradual rollout: when another member of a campaign has Pro, they can use supported tools in that campaign only. Check plans on the pricing page, then reconnect if you upgraded after connecting.

The agent says something is “not found or inaccessible”

The campaign, character, note, or scene doesn't exist, isn't active, or your account can't access it. Quest Portal doesn't say which, to protect other people's content. Check that you're connected with the right account, that you're a member of the campaign, and that the item isn't private to someone else. Ask the agent to list your campaigns to find the right one.

Scheduling or note search isn't available

Scheduling is in preview and needs preview access on your account. Searching inside note contents is enabled per campaign and has extra eligibility requirements. The agent can still list and read notes without it.

Adding the plugin marketplace fails in Claude Code

Use the full URL, https://github.com/QuestPortal/plugins. The owner/repo shorthand can fail on macOS.

Privacy and support

Quest Portal shares only what your agent requests, within the permissions you approved. Content your agent reads is processed by your AI provider under its own terms. Quest Portal's privacy policy and terms of service apply to your Quest Portal data.
