Turn Your PDFs Into Campaign Knowledge (PDF Support is Here)
Upload PDFs to your Quest Portal campaign, search them with the Assistant, and share them with your table.
If you’re like most Game Masters, you already own a lot of books lying around on your computer as PDFs.
You can now add those PDFs to your Quest Portal Campaigns and unleash our Assistant to answer questions, help you prep and run campaigns, create NPCs and other characters, and generate scenes and notes.
This is the new workflow to save you hours of adding data into a VTT. Just add the PDF as a book and have the Assistant take care of the rest.
With our new PDF support, you can:
- Upload PDFs as campaign sources
- View them in a dedicated PDF viewer
- Share them with your table
- Ask the Assistant questions that reference them
- Generate characters, scenes, notes, and more
PDF Support is now available for Pro and Max subscription tiers. Perfect for mid-session rulings, quick prep, and turning static books into playable content.
Quest Portal is a virtual tabletop (VTT) built for running tabletop roleplaying games — with an AI Assistant that helps you upload, search, and play using your TTRPG PDFs and campaign content.
Your books, at your table
TTRPG rulebooks in PDF format. Adventure modules. Homebrew documents. Random tables. Setting guides. Character sheets.
Now you can bring those PDFs directly into Quest Portal — as playable, searchable campaign sources.
That means:
Your whole table can access it (or hide it from players)
It’s viewable inside Quest Portal
And once it’s processed, our Assistant can search it and use it to help you
So instead of hunting through page numbers mid-session, you can simply ask:
“What does this spell do exactly?”
“Summarize the rules for grappling from this PDF.”
“Make an NPC based on the lore from this document.”
“Create a scene that introduces this faction.”
And the Assistant will respond using the material you uploaded.
How it Works
When you upload a PDF as a campaign source, Quest Portal processes it and converts the content into searchable text. Once processing is complete, the Assistant can reference that content to answer questions and generate campaign assets.
Key details
Available on: Pro and Max subscription tiers
Campaign PDF sources: Unlimited size (processing time varies)
Chat attachments: PDFs + images up to 10MB
Can share with table: Yes
Assistant can: search, summarize, generate characters/scenes/notes
Two ways to use PDFs in Quest Portal
PDF support comes in two different modes, depending on what you want to do:
Upload PDFs as Campaign Sources
If you are looking to use the PDF repeatedly over the lifetime of your campaign, you can add the PDF as a source in your Campaign. This makes it viewable with our PDF viewer or you can turn on Reader Mode. We process the PDF and make it searchable and usable for the Assistant.
Tired of PDF viewers? Try Reader Mode
You can switch between viewing the original PDF and the processed text in our native Library viewer. Reader Mode brings the clean reading experience of Quest Portal to your PDF.
Reader mode does not currently support viewing images from the PDF and we can't guarantee that every page comes out perfectly extracted.
Looking for quick answers and actions?
Attach PDFs or images directly in Assistant Chat
Sometimes you just want quick help on a single file without adding it to your campaign library. You can attach smaller PDFs and images (up to 10MB) directly into your Assistant chat and use those files to create new characters, images, notes, and more. It does all of this without creating a new source, so it's ideal for one-time queries or actions.
“Turn this PDF into character sheets”
“Extract the key NPCs from this page”
“Generate a scene based on this image”
“Write notes from this document”
“Summarize this into a session plan”
Quick Tutorial: Upload a PDF as a Source
Here’s how to add a PDF into your campaign in just a few minutes
Step 1 — Open your campaign library
Go into the campaign where you want to add the PDF and open the Library.
Step 2 — Click the Upload PDF icon
Choose the PDF you want to upload from your device.
Step 3 — Save as a new source
The PDF will be uploaded and analyzed. The analysis will suggest a name for the source, an appropriate game system, and write a description. You can edit this yourself if you want. Confirm that you own the PDF and hit save.
Step 4 — Wait for processing to complete
Processing can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the size of the PDF.
Step 5 — Ask Assistant to create assets
After that, you can ask the Assistant anything — and get help that’s actually grounded in your content.

FAQ
Which plans include PDF support?
PDF uploads and processing are available in Pro and Max subscription tiers. PDFs can be added as campaign sources and attached into conversations with the Assistant.
Can I share PDFs with my group?
Yes. When you upload a PDF as a source, you can choose to keep it private (hide from players) or share it with your table.
Can I attach files to the Assistant chat without Pro or Max?
No, only Pro and Max subscription tiers can attach PDFs and images.
What can the Assistant do with PDFs?
Once processed (for campaign sources) or attached (in chat), the Assistant can:
answer questions about the content
summarize rules and lore
create characters, scenes, and notes
extract tables and key details
help you prep sessions faster
Does the Assistant cite or reference the PDF?
When used as a campaign source, the Assistant can search your PDF content and respond based on it. It will provide a Library Link to the page where it finds its answer. If you attach the file into the chat without creating a source it won't explicitly give you a link, but it might be able to give you a page number or chapter name if asked directly.
Is there a file size limit for files?
For Assistant chat attachments (PDFs and images): 5MB. There is currently no limit on the size of PDFs added as Library sources. However, processing of very large files can take a long time.
Can I upload images too?
Yes. Images up to 5MB can be attached directly into the Assistant chat.
PDF support is a game-changer for Game Masters. Upload your first PDF and ask your first question. Your next adventure awaits.
