Pick Core if you want the virtual tabletop: campaigns, characters, scenes, maps, notes, dice and sessions with your group. Pick Pro if you also want the AI tools, such as the Game Master Assistant, PDF imports, session recordings and connecting Claude or ChatGPT, plus monthly credits to spend on them. Either way you can try it free for 30 days with no card, and if you're a player, you may not need a plan at all: one plan covers the whole table in that campaign.
Current prices and the full billing rules live in Plans and Billing. This guide helps you decide.
Who this is for
New GMs choosing a plan, players wondering whether they need to pay to join a friend's game, and anyone deciding between the Core and Pro trials.
Core or Pro: a quick way to decide
Choose Core if:
You run your game with your own prep and want a place to play: maps, scenes, character sheets, dice, notes, the initiative tracker and session scheduling.
You don't plan to use AI in your game.
Choose Pro if you'd use any of these:
The Game Master Assistant and AI generation for images, characters, campaigns and avatars
AI Notes
Library Link, where the Assistant searches the books you own and links to the pages it used
PDF imports
Session recordings and transcripts
Connecting your own AI agent, such as Claude or ChatGPT, over MCP
Monthly credits for the AI tools (see What are Credits?)
Pro includes everything in Core, so you never need both.
An example: a GM running a published D&D adventure from a PDF, who wants the Assistant to find rules in the book and draft NPCs, wants Pro. A GM running a long Call of Cthulhu campaign from their own notes, who just needs maps, handouts, dice and a schedule, is well served by Core.
How the 30-day trial works
When you create an account, Quest Portal asks which plan you'd like to try:
Pro trial: everything in Pro, plus 300 credits.
Core trial: everything in Core, without credits.
Both are free from start to finish. No card is needed, nothing is charged when the trial ends, and it doesn't renew. Each account gets one trial.
Two details worth knowing:
Started with Core and changed your mind? Go to Home or Settings → Billing and click Activate Pro trial. Your end date stays the same; switching never makes the trial longer.
The 300 credits wait for a verified email. Your Pro features work right away; open the verification email to unlock the credits. Signing up with Google or Apple counts as verified.
You can always see where you stand in Settings → Billing:
When the trial ends
Nothing is charged. If you don't choose a plan, your campaigns, characters and notes stay readable, but you can't make changes or create a campaign, and the AI tools stop. Credits you didn't use stay on your account; they never expire. Pick a plan any time on the Membership page to carry on.
Playing in someone else's campaign
One plan covers the whole table. When any active member of a campaign has Core or Pro, or a Core or Pro trial, everyone in that campaign can play there without a plan of their own: join sessions, roll, take notes and update their characters in that campaign.
Here's what that looks like for a player with no plan who joined our D&D campaign, The Greywater Road. Home offers a trial for their own campaigns and characters, yet they can still play in The Greywater Road, join its sessions and answer its schedule, because the GM's trial covers the table.
When you join through an invite link, Quest Portal tells you if the table is already covered, and you join without starting a trial.
What the table's plan doesn't cover:
Your own campaigns. Running your own game needs your own plan or trial.
The AI tools inside Quest Portal. The Game Master Assistant, AI Notes, generation and PDF imports need your own Pro or Pro trial, even when your GM has Pro.
Credits. Everyone spends their own credits; nobody can spend another member's.
One Pro tool does reach the whole table: when someone in a campaign has Pro, everyone in that campaign can connect their own Claude or ChatGPT to that campaign. See How to use Claude or ChatGPT to prep your campaign.

If you had an account before the new plans, what changes depends on what you had: free accounts get a Pro trial and credits, and older subscriptions and lifetime purchases get Pro's features. Check the section on existing accounts in Plans and Billing for your case.
Troubleshooting
My plan doesn't show up after buying. Refresh the page or restart the app. In the mobile app, try Restore purchases.
My 300 trial credits are missing. Check that your email is verified, then refresh Billing.
I can't enter a session. Nobody at that table has a plan or trial right now. Ask your GM, or start your own trial.
Next step
Create your account and pick a trial, or compare both plans on the Membership page. The exact prices, credit amounts, refunds and how to cancel are in Plans and Billing.
